OSTEOPOROSIS

The loss of bone mass, that is, the quantity of bone we have, is caused by the decalcification that they suffer, and in the case of women, it is intensified by the loss of the protective action that feminine hormones exert on our bones.

Nowadays, it is well known that there is a strong relationship between the loss of bone mass and the risks of suffering fractures. Premature detection of excessive bone mass loss is the only way to be able to prevent the manifestation of osteoporosis and fractures.

The method used to detect it is by using Lumbar Column and Femur Bone Densitometry. It consists of a painless exploration similar to X Rays and is recommended to women that fall in any of the following categories:

  • Premature menopause before the age of 40.

  • Prolonged treatments with corticoids, thyroid hormone, anxiolytics, or anticonvulsants

  • Smoking.

  • Low weight.

  • Women that suffer Anorexia Nervosa, Chronic Renal Insufficiency, Hyperthyroidism, Suprarenal Gland Pathology, Hepatic Insufficiency, Immune-dependent Diabetes Mellitus, Multiple Myeloma, or Lung Obstructive Disease; and in Gastrectomized or Post-Transplant Patients.

  • Prolonged Immobilization.

  • Family history of osteoporosis.

  • Previous suspicious bone fractures.

  • Radiological Evidence of Osteoporosis.
